360 Multi Source Feedback |
For revalidation purposes the Royal
College has commissioned a review of the MSF
instruments to see which one is suitable for
revalidation purposes. At present there are a
variety of tools you could use.
360 Feedback can provide useful reflective evidence
from the people you work with. The more people
involved the more representative the overall
feedback.
But remember this form of information comes with a
health warning! The nature of anonymised peer
appraisal means you may be faced with some
unexpected and sometimes hurtful feedback and you
will not be able to discuss the findings with the
people making the comments. Time your 360 appraisal
so that you can discuss the results with your
appraiser at your annual NHS appraisal. Otherwise
(or in addition) consider discussing the findings
with your practice manager, CME tutor or a colleague
outside your workplace.
You may wish to start with a tick box form of
assessment which directs feedback in a more closed
format and can be less threatening to everyone than
an open comment format - to download an example of
this
please click here.
You can use the feedback tool from HcAT. This is a
GPs is called the GP-Sheffield Peer Review
Assessment Tool (GP-SPRAT)
HcAT is a not-for-profit subsidiary of Sheffield
Children’s Hospital. Set up to provide assessment
tools locally HcAT now provide 360° and other
assessment tools across the United Kingdom for a
number of national organisations. They are funded by
NCAS so the process is free for you.

You can create your own form or use or adapt the
form from the BMA website, Asking your practice
manager to anonymously correlate the results and
take out any comments which could be offensive or
which could identify the person making them.

In Derbyshire we are helping with the piloting a
tool “360 Clinical”. There is a cost for using this
however the PCT presently funds 50% of this, the
first 100. Please contact the appraisal
administrator for details. Website

Appraisal:

You can also take part in a research study
investigating what factors influence doctors self
ratings for assessment. The aim of the study is to
improve understanding about why doctors sometimes
agree and sometimes disagree with the feedback they
receive.
