General Practitioners
need to be aware of child protection because of its
devastating consequences. Their teams need to be
aware of child protection issues because we all of
us have a responsibility to care for children.
Training needs to be ongoing because for most of us,
having contact with abused children is a thankfully
rare event. Safeguarding therefore needs to be at
the forefront of our minds so that we do not miss an
opportunity to help a child at risk.
Ongoing training should therefore be part of our
personal learning programme. There is much training
available in Derbyshire, and GPs can contact their
named doctors and named nurses for advice on which
courses are valuable.
The RCGP has published a toolkit for General
Practice on Safeguarding Children and young people
intended for use by the practice team
